The facility that now operates as Greenidge Generation in Upstate New York began in 1937 as a coal-fired power plant, commissioned by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. AES Corporation purchased the plant in 1999 which continued to operate until 2011. In 2014, a group of private investment funds sponsored and managed by Atlas Holdings LLC purchased the Greenidge plant and converted it to clean-burning natural gas.
This conversion established Greenidge as a leader in environmental stewardship, a legacy which continues with its transaction processing operation. Greenidge spent several years securing the necessary state and federal permits and approvals and underwent a rigorous environmental assessment in advance of resuming operations at its New York facility. Greenidge operates entirely within all relevant federal, state and local permits and ordinances for its facility, including a State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) water permit and a Title V Air Permit. Greenidge operates entirely on natural gas, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
The Greenidge facility provides a clean, reliable source of power to New York state鈥檚 energy grid: providing the electricity necessary to power up to 20,000 homes and businesses in the region in 2020 alone.
Greenidge has worked closely with the local community to ensure its operation is both environmentally sound and a critical piece of infrastructure serving the community鈥檚 energy needs and in the region. Between 2014 and 2020, Greenidge鈥檚 capital investments, directly and indirectly, supported approximately 200 jobs in New York State in construction and related industries, with over $13 million in employee earnings. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Greenidge鈥檚 spending supported over 80 businesses in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.
Our data center in South Carolina is set on a 175-acre site. We believe the site will have at least 100 MW of mining capacity when fully developed. Our electricity at the site is from a provider whose power is sourced from over 60% zero carbon sources including nuclear power. test
Greenidge Generation acquired a 12-acre site in Columbus, Mississippi. This site boasts a mining capacity of 32.5 MW, marking a significant milestone in Greenidge鈥檚 growth. In Q2 2024, Greenidge deployed an initial 7 MW of miners, reinforcing our commitment to optimizing our self-mining capabilities.
The Columbus site operates with low-cost power, aligning with Greenidge鈥檚 dedication to efficient and sustainable energy use. By leveraging this site鈥檚 capacity, Greenidge continues to enhance its position as a leader in the cryptocurrency datacenter and power generation industry. This expansion not only contributes to our operational growth but also brings economic benefits to the local community through job creation and infrastructure development.
Greenidge Generation expanded its footprint with the development of a site in Underwood, North Dakota, enhancing its mining capacity with an additional 7.5 MW lease. This strategic move is part of Greenidge鈥檚 broader initiative to increase its self-mining capabilities and optimize operational efficiency.
The North Dakota site represents a key addition to Greenidge鈥檚 portfolio, supported by Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management contracts that are expected to boost revenue in this growing business line. The additional miners deployed on the site significantly contribute to Greenidge and partners’ combined hash rate, projected to increase to 2.8 EH/s.
